Dying for Spring
I have been painting with acrylics for quite some time now. I love them. I am able to mix other water soluble mediums with them, how they dry quickly so your artistic process isn't interrupted by waiting for them to dry. A hair dryer works to speed the process if you are really impatient.
Oil painting gives me a whole different perspective on painting. You have to be patient. Slow down and think about what you are going to put on the canvas. I have been dying to fall in love with oil paints. I see their capability; the brightness of colors that aren't the same as acrylic, the smell, the fact that they take time to dry on your pallet and canvas. They work magically in so many ways.
For the past month I have been studying them. Figuring out how we work together, undercoats, mono-colors, mixing colors, and placing them together.
This is the latest oil painting I created this past weekend. Dying for spring and to to start my rabbit FuFu's garden... it's all I can think about. I love the softness they bring to my work. While I was working on it, it took me to a brighter place. That's where I want people to go when they look at it. To a warm santuary where the poppies are huge and brightly colored.
For my next painting, is a continuation of these poppies but with a few partridges perhaps. I'm waiting for the undercoat to dry on it's 24"x 48" canvas. Mmmmmmm...

2011: The Year of the Rabbit
THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT, 2011
02/03/2011 - 01/22/2012 (Metal)
According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, which begins on February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animals signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign. Rabbits are private individuals and a bit introverted. People born in the Year of the Rabbit are reasonably friendly individuals who enjoy the company of a group of good friends. They are good teachers, counselors and communicators, but also need their own space.
According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves. It is a time for negotiation. Don't try to force issues, because if you do you will ultimately fail. To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children. Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle, so you will be able to calmly deal with any problem that may arise.

Que Sera Sera
I created a colored pencil piece of this dragon while I was on vacation in Maine with some friends. While recreating it on canvas, I noticed it started to turn into something different than anticipated. It portrays the hardship from my past through a dreamlike fantasy... masked by the beauty of repetition and wonderment.

Five Little Friends
There are several layers to my life; cycling, yoga, art, spiritual philosophies, animals, and friends all share MEGA importance to me.
When I started this painting I had been surfing with a few friends, and wanted to create a multimedia piece that showed the connection that I felt when I had caught a wave. I stretched some canvas on wood, applied acrylic paint, then used vinyl to mask off specific areas to create sunspots. I then sketched waves and photocopied it onto tracing paper. I also relate water to mountain bike riding, yoga and simply flowing through challenges that occur. I then copied a mythical teaching that I have been carrying with me based on the Buddhist philosophy that I am quite fond of. I applied the copies to the canvas and finished with several layers of mod podge and acrylic paint. For some reason the painting looked incomplete to me. It was missing an aspect of my life. I decided to add five little friends. My friends have been a huge part of my life. Without them, I would be incomplete. This one's for you, buddies. It will be displayed at o2 Yoga studio in Somerville along with several other pieces of mine. Come by and check them out!
